POTSDAM —For centuries, cone shells have been treasured by collectors for their beautifully patterned shells. But these marine snails are also among the most poisonous and complex creatures on earth. Over the last few decades, scientists have begun looking at the components of their deadly venom as promising sources for biomedical and pharmacological applications. See Press Release TOP POTSDAM — With the recent approval of the new biology degree program by the State Board of Education and the State University of New York, SUNY Potsdam students interested in majoring in biology now have a choice as to whether they receive a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. See Press Release TOP POTSDAM —Sergiy Minko, an expert in colloid science and former senior scientist at the GW Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany, was recently named the Egon Matijevic Chair of Chemistry at Clarkson University. The appointment of Minko is the latest development in Clarkson's distinguished 40-year history as a major center for colloid and fine particle science research. Detail TOP POTSDAM —Daniel ben-Avraham, professor of Physics at Clarkson University, has been named a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Ben-Avraham's research interests include statistical physics of networks, polymers and self-avoiding walks, percolation and diffusion in disordered media, kinetics of reactions, heterogeneous catalysis, non-equilibrium dynamics, dynamical phase transition, Monte-Carlo techniques, and the structure and dynamics of protein. Detail TOP POTSDAM —Two students from Clarkson University's chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) received top awards this year at NSBE's Region One Fall Conference held recently in Boston. Clarkson juniors Dionne Dixon and Onyinyechi Ibeneche received a first-place and third-place award, respectively, in the Undergraduate Students in Technical Research competition. Detail TOP |
