As New York proceeds into the dawn of a new century, full of promise and opportunity, it does so during a time of unprecedented economic achievement. Never before has our State's economic future been as bright, nor has there been a stronger platform from which to cultivate an even more prosperous and technologically advanced economy that can benefit New Yorkers of today, and for generations to come.

During the past eight years, New York has planted the seeds for profound change, creating a more vibrant and strengthened Empire State. Those seeds have taken root and are thriving today in the form of hundreds of thousands of new jobs for New Yorkers, new and expanding businesses and a restored image of New York as an attractive and highly competitive business destination.

To continue upon its path of prosperity, New York must look to the frontiers of tomorrow by harnessing the tremendous economic power of its inherent technological resources. These resources include a network of outstanding public and private research universities, a workforce tailor-made for making advances in technology, and a "brain trust" of more than 360,000 scientists and engineers. New York also has nearly 10 percent of the nation's Ph.D.'s, 203 members of the National Academy of Sciences, more than 10 percent of the entire membership of the National Institute of Medicine, nearly 170 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 995 members of the American Physical Society.

Long recognized as the birthplace of technology and innovation, New York ranks among the world's most sophisticated and prestigious locations for technology-driven research. From the Erie Canal to e-commerce, New York's enduring legacy is at the cutting-edge of the most commercially promising technologies of the day.

NYSTAR is making New York the leader in high-technology academic research and economic development by undertaking a host of new, unprecedented programs and initiatives. These initiatives have resulted in the creation of world-class, state-of-the-art research centers, the modernization of existing research centers and the rapid transfer of technologies from the research lab to the marketplace.

NYSTAR is also attracting the best and brightest scientific talent in the nation and the world to New York's research campuses, securing a greater portion of Federal grants for our researchers, and coordinating New York's high-tech assets and resources.

Through a wide range of programs and other strategic initiatives, NYSTAR is strengthening the formation of university-business partnerships to develop and commercialize the most economically promising technologies of tomorrow. From the commercialization of these technologies will come the creation of new companies and most importantly, a new source of high-quality, high-value jobs.
